As of January 1, 2025, the new CSRD regulations will come into effect. From that point onward, large companies and organizations will be required to report on their ecological and social impact. One aspect that will play an increasingly important role is the biodiversity of real estate. Blooming Buildings, an expert in greening urban areas and existing buildings, is therefore introducing a new service to help organizations address this: the Biodiversity Boost. Within one quarter, Blooming Buildings can scan opportunities, launch a pilot, and develop a concrete approach to make organizations more biodiverse, climate-adaptive, and socially responsible through strategically placed planting.
From Blind Spot to Green Spot: Biodiversity as a Forgotten Impact Driver
Tanja van der Knoop, founder of Blooming Buildings, notes that many companies are struggling with the upcoming obligations under the new CSRD regulations: “They need to make their sustainability policies transparent. And they are expected to take steps. Within the CSRD goals, the biodiversity of existing buildings will play an increasingly larger role. To become more sustainable, real estate companies have so far primarily focused on circular building materials. Nature, strangely enough, was often overlooked. Yet significant steps can be taken in this area. With qualitative planting, you can give the biodiversity of existing buildings a huge boost. Furthermore, we have proven methods to measure the impact. We’re happy to use our expertise to turn this blind spot into a green spot and help companies with their CSRD policies.”
The Biodiversity Boost: Five Steps to Better CSRD Policy
The Biodiversity Boost consists of five steps. It begins with a quick scan in which Blooming Buildings maps out the current situation and shows the biodiverse opportunities. Then, the pilot phase follows: a clear project that provides insights into the possibilities. Using data, a future-proof concrete approach and policy will then be developed. Afterward, the boost follows—implementing the green plan to ensure an unprecedented increase in biodiversity. Finally, Blooming Buildings can assist with reporting by quantifying the impact. Tanja van der Knoop explains: “Ideally, every company goes through all five steps. But you can also choose to just take the quick scan and then decide whether to proceed further.”
B Corp and the Power of Biodiversity
Blooming Buildings has a solid track record in increasing biodiversity. In November, Blooming Buildings became a member of the B Corp network. This international certification recognizes companies that not only pursue profit but also demonstrably make a positive impact on people and the environment. The main pillar of Blooming Buildings’ impact is increasing biodiversity at existing buildings and urban areas. As a leader in urban greening, Blooming Buildings knows better than anyone what planting can do for existing buildings. Using the Biodiversity Net Gain, a measurement method developed in England, Blooming Buildings has been able to make biodiversity gains transparent.
Impact on Multiple Levels
The increase in biodiversity will be the main pillar of the CSRD advice. But qualitative planting does more than just boost biodiversity. Van der Knoop explains: “By greening paved areas, you also help reduce heat stress and prevent water damage. You make the air healthier, create better spaces for relaxation, and help strengthen social cohesion. Through all these positive effects of qualitative planting, you even increase the financial returns of your assets. Nature is a gift that keeps on giving. We say: take advantage of it. It’s right there for the taking.”
